This is the first bed sized quilt I ever made. It is made of 100% cotton, machine pieced, hand quilted and measures 86x112 inches. This was a sampler quilt taken in classes taught by Sue Wert at the Bittersweet Shop in Yardley,PA. I signed up for this class with my best friend. We took these classes in another students home as the shop was very small.The original pattern was to use 12 blocks with plain sashing,corner blocks and border. I wanted something a bit different as you can see.
I went to the local library and found more patterns to add to make it more personal. The tree block has the names and dates of my parents, my in laws, my husband and I and my child quilted on a small block. The tree trunk has a heart with my husbands and my initials quilted into it. The boat block has the name of our sailboat quilted on it. The house has our address complete with dog house and the dogs name .
My name was picked for the class to hand baste the quilt in preparation for hand quilting. It took me 15 years to finish the hand quilting. When I chose the quilt batting I picked extra loft polyester batting. In this case "more was not better", but what did I know! I started the hand quilting process by putting the maximum amount of quilting possible in any available area. What a mistake-I was committed. I worked on this hand quilting on and off until it was finally finished. The label reads -
